Kathleen Neylon, referred to as Katie by some, is a sculptural artist influenced largely by the popular art and cultures present the in the regionally distinct, theme park adjacent, area of Orlando, Florida, where she currently resides. She draws on the unusual and the obscure cultural histories of the world, pop culture, or recent events and embeds humor and wit into her pieces while simultaneously eluding to deeper meanings and higher conceptual depth. The materials used and the strongly expressive and figurative posing of her creations define her aesthetic and give her work a unique visual distinction.
My research usually focuses on the stereotypical elements of cultural folklore and the usurping of expectations to create new or layered meaning. However, in this residency I sought to explore medium more then narrative. While my work always has hidden messages, I enjoyed exploring new concepts, materials, and approaches.
